The Next Great American Band: Season Finale, The Clark Brothers Win
December 22, 2007 by Lynn

Last night, the season finale of The Next Great American Band aired. It’s hard to beleive that the season is over already. It’s been a fun ride and I hope there’s a season 2.
The show began with my favorite of the top 12 bands, The Likes of You, performing When I Fall from Grace as they showed a montage of the eliminated bands. It was really good. I’m sorry that The Likes of You didn’t make it farther in the competition, but I’ll be watching for them anyway.

The Next Great American Band: Pas de Très Bien

The bands were called up one by one to perform, and one band was eliminated without getting to perform. Each band had to perform a song by Rod Stewart.

First to perform was Dot Dot Dot. They came out and performed the song Young Turks. The vocals just weren’t right for the song, I felt. They were great musicians, it just wasn’t a good match for them.

The Next Great American Band: Cliff Wagner Got No Satisfaction
November 26, 2007 by Lynn

The bands were called up one by one to perform, only one band was eliminated. Each band had to perform a song by the Rolling Stones team of Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. Talk about a hard act to follow!.

Très Bien performed first with their rendition of Get Off of My Cloud. I just don’t love their vocals or their style. *sigh*

The Next Great American Band: A Shocking Elimination!
November 19, 2007 by Lynn

Once again, the bands were called up one by one to perform, only one band was eliminated. Each band had to perform a song written by songwriting team, Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller. There are so many good ones, it’ll be interesting to see what they play.

The first group to perform was Light of Doom. These young guys are obviously the favorites of the younger female audience and they certainly are talented, especially for their age. They performed Jailhouse Rock. They’re so young, they may not realize how daunting the task of reinventing that song really was. But they did a good job.

The Next Great American Band: Two More Bands Go Home
November 11, 2007 by Lynn

Once again, the bands were called up one by one to perform, and the two not called up found out that they were eliminated. Each band had to perform a song from singer/songwriter, Billy Joel. Sounds like another great night of music.

The first team to perform was Franklin Bridge. I really like these guys. They started the show by singing Big Shot. The lead guitar was awesome and the vocals were tight. Billy Joel must be proud of them!

The Next Great American Band: First Eliminations
November 4, 2007 by Lynn

This week’s show had to eliminate the first two bands. The show did a very cruel thing and had them perform one by one, with the two bands left at the end being the ones to go home. They had to sit through the whole show and everyone else’s performances before they found out if they would be out or in. That’s a very tough thing to make them do.
Oh, well, it’s not my show, so who cares if I think it’s cruel or not, right?
This time, each band had to perform a song by Elton John & Bernie Taupin. They also had to perform an original song of their own. Here’s a recap:

Sixwire started things off with their own song and it sounded pretty strong to me, even tough I generally hate country music. Then they sang Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me. I just can’t be that open minded. I hated it. (Because it sounded too country and because I love the original…hey, I’m human.)

The Next Great American Band: First Performances

This show is so similar in its dynamics to the original American Idol. There’s the band member with technically helpful advice John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls (counterpart to Randy Jackson). There’s the female singer and performer’s ally Sheila E (counterpart to Paula Abdul). And let’s not forget the grumpy, critical foreigner, Ian “Dicko” Dickson (counterpart to Simon Cowell.) He’s Aussie instead of British, though. Hey, if the formula works, why mess with it?
Tonight, the bands were told to perform two numbers each. The first was to be a cover a Bob Dylan song & the second was to be an original song they had written. Here’s the list of performances with my personal commentary. (And I want to hear what you think of them too, so please leave a comment!)
The Likes of You - I have to admit that this is my favorite of the bands. The lead singer’s voice is great and I just love their sound. I hope they last a long time in the competition:

The Next Great American Band: Auditions
October 20, 2007 by Lynn

I watched this episode with so many bands auditioning for the top 12, that I got totally bored after a while. I’m glad they didn’t drag the auditions on for weeks, like American Idol often does, or I doubt they’d have anyone watching by the time the competition acually started.
Anyway, after seeing some real freaks perform and some pretty great bands perform, they narrowed it down to these top 12 bands for the competition:
- Tres Bien
- Light of Doom
- The Hatch
- The Clark Brothers
- Dot Dot Dot
- The Muggs
- Denver and the Mile Hugh Orchestra
- Sixwire
- Cliff Wagner and the Old No. 7
- The Likes of You
- Franklin Bridge
- Rocket
I’ll post band bios and follow the season as it goes along.
So what did you think of the show? Is it a hit? A big miss? Too soon to tell? Leave a comment to share your thoughts!
