Kid Nation: Thoughts About the Show
September 21, 2007 by Lynn
I have to admit to being skeptical about the new reality series, Kid Nation. There has been a lot of controversial press about the show and, being a mother, I absolutely cannot imagine sending an 8-year-old out into the wilderness with 39 other kids to rough it alone. That sounds like insanity and/or bad parenting to me.
But then, the show premiered this week. I watched reluctantly, not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.
The kids are obviously all very bright and exceptional young people. That’s the first important thing to note. Not every kid would be suited for this sort of thing.
And if you consider that there was a camera crew on the premises at all times, and a host that kept making appearances, it’s clear that the kids weren’t totally alone in the wilderness. *whew!*
That out of the way, I was surprised at the way the show unfolded. The kids had four leaders appointed for them, apparently because they were even more gifted and showed aptitude for leading the others.
