Survivor’s Billy Garcia to Attend Boston Red Sox Game on Tuesday, May 20th. Will He Survive?
Billy Garcia lasted six days on Survivor: Cook Islands. The real question is, how long will he survive at Boston’s Fenway Park?

I met Billy Garcia last year at a Reality TV event. Survivor: Cook Islands had aired six months prior, so Billy was someone who I was very familiar with. Billy was voted out by his tribe on the second episode of Survivor: Cook Islands after his team threw a challenge with the intent of ousting him early. As he bid his tribe farewell, he became one of the most remembered castaways from Survivor as he ‘professed his love’ for a fellow castaway (after just six days on the island!), shocking host Jeff Probst as well as Billy’s tribe mates. To hear Billy tell the story today, he was actually going out in a grand and shocking way, intending to make his television moment memorable. And that, he did!
Billy lives in New York City and is a huge New York Yankees fan. I live in Boston and am naturally a Boston Red Sox fan. Anyone who knows anything about sports knows that the greatest sports rivalry has always been the Red Sox vs. Yankees. Whenever I meet someone from New York, the subject of baseball always comes up. If the New York fan is a Yankees fan, we laugh and say we can never be friends because a Sox fan and Yankees fan just don’t mix! If they are a Mets fan, we’re cool.

Throughout the past year, Billy has teased me about being a Sox fan. I like to remind him of our 2004 and 2007 World Series Championship wins, and he throws the Yankees’ 26 wins right back at me. He says I can have our seven Boston wins because New York is still 19 ahead! Well, last I checked, New York has had an eight-year drought and is currently in last place in their division, while Boston is currently number two. Call me a cynic, but I don’t think the Yankees have a chance against our formidable Red Sox this year!
Knowing Billy’s love for the Yankees, I invited him to a Red Sox game and asked him if he wanted to see how the other half lived. The game is Tuesday, May 20th, and the Sox are playing the Kansas City Royals. So it’s not even a Sox vs. Yankees game. I was surprised when he said yes — that he would drive up to Boston to see a non-Yankees game! I told him that it’s great, but that he couldn’t wear a t-shirt that said NY-26, Boston-7. He laughed and asked, “can I wear my Yankees jersey”? And then I laughed and said he’ll be taking his life into his own hands! Billy’s only redemption is that he is Dominican, so he IS actually a Big Papi and Manny Ramirez fan.
At the Survivor: Micronesia Fans vs. Favorites after party, I mentioned to Jonathan Penner, who is a Sox fan, that Billy was planning to come to the game wearing the Yankees jersey, and he replied ‘Good luck with that Billy!’. And when I told Brian Corridan of Survivor: Guatemala, also of New York, of Billy’s intent, he said, “That’s a brave man there!”
So this Tuesday, Billy and his cousin Larry are coming up to Boston to watch the Sox take on the Royals. With these two cousins wearing their Yankees jerseys at a non-Yankees ball game, I wonder if the fight will be on the field or off. I told Billy that if he gets things thrown at him, such as a Fenway Frank or a bag of peanuts, he might actually want to keep them as they cost a pretty penny! And if there is too much commotion caused by our New York loving friends at Fenway Park, we might have to take up a Survivor collection for Billy’s bail!
Check back later this week and I’ll let you know if Billy survived Fenway, and if I’m ever allowed back in. Go Sox!!!
