Big Brother 8: Dick Wins!

by Lynn on September 19th, 2007

Dick Donato

Dick Donato is the winner of Big Brother 8. Congrats to you, Dick!! And to Daniele for second place!

The finale of Big Brother 8 was anti-climactic for me. Once Dick and Daniele made it to the final two, the show lost its suspense. The two had been talking about “WE won $550,000.” and at one point, Dick mentioned to Daniele that if either of them won, they should split the winnings and she said quickly, “NO!” Then she whispered something to him that we couldn’t hear.

In the house, on After Dark, they were discussing the “thing they couldn’t talk about until after the wrap party.” and it always came at a time that made me suspect that they have an agreement of some sort. They also kept saying that it really didn’t matter to them who won. Sounds to me like they made a deal of some sort.

As for which I thought deserved to win, I actually think they made a great team and that neither would have made it to the end without the other. I’m glad I didn’t have to vote either way. It would have been tough.

Interestingly, we found out that America told Eric that we wanted Dick to win. I wonder how truly close the vote was. Eric came through once again and convinced the majority to vote the way he wanted. I’d have to say that Eric was awesome as America’s player. Very few people would have been able to manipulate the game and still keep the secret the way he did. And it’s been mentioned around the ‘net that he actually came in third place because he won $40,000. I think he totally earned it.

It will be interesting to see if either or both of the showmances from season 8 actually survive or thrive outside the house. Daniele and Nick have been apart for a while; it’ll be fun to see if they can pick it up where they left off. It was also interesting that her boyfriend, Kris, was conspicuously absent from the finale. (She didn’t even say that she wanted him there.) Hmmmm…

As for Eric & Jessica, I don’t know what I think of them together. They certainly seem to care about each other, but who knows if the Kansas/New York situation can be resolved.

This has truly been the most volatile and controversial season of Big Brother yet. We had Amber’s anti-Semitic comments, her delusions of becoming a model, her constant crying and her obvious lack of education (I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt that she’s not stupid) that caused her to not know any word longer than two syllables.

We had the narcissistic Jen who could only talk about herself and who at one point said that she’s not very good at feeling sad when bad things happen to other people. She said that she felt something, but wasn’t sure what it was. That was the statement that did it for me. She’s a total mess and proved what a shallow, self-important person she truly is. Thank goodness, she didn’t make it to the end! I still think that only giving her a penalty vote for breaking the food rules was not enough.

There was a lot of controversy about the various religious beliefs of the houseguests. Is it just me, or is this the first season that religion was such an issue?

And then there’s Dick. Where do I even start to talk about Dick Donato? He makes himself look like a hard rock caricature, with the red tips on his hair, the tattoos galore, the eyebrow piercing and the black fingernails. (Remember when the houseguests were preparing for the guitar smashing challenge and Dick looked basically the same. Zach asked him if he had put on anything new and he replied, “Not really.” LOL!!)

He could have the funniest things to say and had some great stories to tell. Those were times when I really did like him. And then there were the very touching times when he broke down and cried with his daughter Daniele and tried so hard to mend the rift between them. I was totally his fan in those moments. He was so patient and giving to his daughter.

But then there’s the other side of Dick. The “Evel” side. (His spelling, not mine.) He could be so totally verbally abusive to anyone and everyone in order to try to shake them off their game. He went over the line by dumping iced tea on Jen’s head. Even if she’s a clueless bitch, it’s still abuse. He would plot and hunt for things to shout at his fellow competitors to upset them before the challenges, and his tactic often worked. But it was still abuse.

Personally, I think Dick’s behavior should have been addressed more by BB. He should have been reined in, warned, given the penalty vote, or something. Because his behavior was good for ratings, he was allowed to abuse everyone in the house. I hope before the next season this is addressed and rules put in place to prevent this again.

And how many times this season did the evictee get “backdoored”? Looks like that should be addressed before the next season too, just to freshen up the competition a bit. I also think that without Jen’s food rule issue, they are still overdue to rethink the whole slop eating thing. I think we’ve gotten tired of the slop. They should come up with another idea to freshen that up next season too.

All things considered, this was a great season of Big Brother. And the Showtime After Dark show was wonderful for us fans too. In fact, I’m still going through withdrawal because I can’t just crawl into bed at night and watch the houseguests play beer pong until I go to sleep. All I can say is HURRY UP, BIG BROTHER 9!!
