David Bromstad From HGTV’s Color Splash: An Exclusive Interview

July 19, 2007 by Lynn

David Bromstad

Today, I had the extreme pleasure to get to talk to David Bromstad, the winner of Design Star, Season 1 and the star of his own HGTV show, Color Splash.

Yes, folks, he’s as down-to-earth, warm and friendly to talk to on the phone as he is on his show. I have been a fan of his from the beginning, but after talking to him, I’m an even bigger fan. He’s totally the person we see on TV. There’s nothing fake about him.

Here’s what we chatted about:

How much has the show changed your life?

Oh, Wow! My life has changed 180 degrees! Before the show, I was just an artist, barely making ends meet and now I get to travel to San Francisco and be on TV. It’s really great! I love it!

Have you permanently relocated to San Francisco or do you still go back and forth to Miami?

No, I still live in Miami. In fact I’m in Miami right now while we’re on a hiatius. San Francisco is cold! But it’s a great city, a wonderful city. I love San Francisco.

Since you have been picked up for 13 more episodes, do you think your show will be a regular on HGTV for a few seasons?

Well, here’s a bit of inside scoop. We’ve already shot the 13 episodes and just got picked up for another two seasons! So maybe the show will become a regular on HGTV.

HGTV is great. They treat us wonderfully. They treat us like stars!

But you ARE a star!

No, I’m just a regular guy! I just got a chance to do what I love on TV. I have fun and that’s the most important part.

What do you hope to do when the show ends someday?

I expect a lot out of myself. I’ve always dreamed of having a brand. I want to have my own line of accessories, wall coverings, paints. I’ve always wanted to have my own furniture line, and now the idea seems more like a possibility! It’s all just so fantastic!

What’s it like to rub elbows with the likes of Vern Yip and Martha McCully?

I’m just honored to get to be in the presence of someone like Vern Yip. When he was on Trading Spaces, I only watched when he was one of the designers. He was my favorite one on the show. His design esthetic and graphic style are both so similar to mine that I really love watching him work. He’s been a real inspiration to me and my career.

And Martha is incredible. She’s also an inspiration. It’s an honor to get to work with them both.

You were a guest judge on the first episode of Design Star 2. How different was it being on that side of the judges table?

It was like sweet revenge. Only, I guess it would be more like sweet revenge if I were judging Vern & Martha.

But they were so good to you!

That’s true, they were both very good to me. It would just be fun to turn the tables like that.

It was so much fun listening to the new cast members make their presentations. I felt sorry for them, because I know what they have ahead of them. It’s a lot of hard work!

What are your thoughts about the season 2 cast members? Are there any standouts for you?

I think they’re all great! Overall, I think they are a well rounded group and bring a lot of talent and personality to the table.

They have an advantage over us in Season 1 too. They know more what to expect than we did. We were told to bring clothes to meet with clients in. People brought Gucci and Prada and such. I didn’t, because I didn’t have any of that stuff, but no one came prepared to do their own work. That’s why you saw people painting in designer clothes. That’s all they were told to bring.

This season, they at least know going in that they will have to do their own work. They’ll be able to come in more prepared than we were.

I think every individual in this season has a lot to offer. They each bring something special to the show and I’m looking forward to getting to watch it. It should be a fun season.

What else can you tell us about Season 2?

This season, the budget’s bigger, the show will be in Las Vegas, the challenges will be harder. Everything will be stepped up from last season. That’s how it works. It’s harder, but it’s also more fun.

Is there anyone from your season of the show that you still keep in touch with?

Oh, yes. I keep in touch with Al [Alice Fakier, runner-up from Season 1]. We’re still really close and I just love her.

Will she ever be a guest on Color Splash?

Oh, absolutely. She’s building a house right now, so not right away. But I definitely plan to bring her on the show, hopefully, in season 4.

What advice would you give to the Season 2 cast, as someone who has been through the entire process before?

Just to stay true to yourself, true to your design style and push yourself. And most of all, be sure to have fun! It’s a great experience!

Do you think you’ll ever take your show to other cities? We in the Midwest would love your design help too!

I definitely hope so. I’m from the Midwest too and hope to get to do that one of these days.

So can I get dibs in for your show to do a room for me?

Absolutely, you’re on the top of the list!

That’s great! Now I’ve got it on record! ;-)

So do you have a web site where we can go see more of your work?

Yes, it’s Bromstad.com. Right now, it’s mostly my old work and some of my artwork, but I’m meeting with the web designer tomorrow and will be updating it very soon.

I just loved getting to talk to David today! He is such a joy to talk to, I felt comfortable immediately. He’s the kind of guy that puts one at ease instantly. It’s a sure thing that his show is a hit. How could it not be?

I want to remind everyone to watch David’s show, Color Splash on HGTV on Mondays at 9:00 PM. ET.

And while you’re setting your TiVo, be sure to set it to catch the second season premiere of Design Star this Sunday on HGTV at 10:00 pm ET. David will be a guest judge for the first episode. You won’t want to miss it!

I can’t help falling more and more in love with David Bromstad. His show Color Splash Is Perfectly Produced! Perfectly casted. Not lacking ever..the entire show is excellence of every single detailed part. David is dressed Perfectly to me! I can’t wait to see what he wears each time. I think his tattoos are the Best I’ve ever seen on a man!!! Perfect tattoos! I am more than thrilled when ever his shirt comes off!!! Thank You for that, it fills a void in my self inflicted lonely life. Today I saw David sleeping on T.V. and I lost it..what a gorgeous vision! Thank You! He is my fantasy. I always hope he is bi-sexual but whatever he is - he is Great. My daughter loves to see her mom become so alive when he shows some flesh. The only other man that did that for me was Criss Angel. David is an Exceptional Artistic talent that {{blows me away}} with every creation he comes up with. His personality is so warm and approachable it steals my heart. The carpenter is perfect as well as Danielle. Such a quality show, I can’t get enough. I love learning new painting and designing tips! Of all the design shows I’ve watched over the years this one just leaps into the future and inspires me to the highest level. I’m so impressed with their work beyond my own imagination. I would like to know what zodiac sign and Chinese animal David is. Of course I would probably faint if they ever did a room for me.

First I was thrilled when you won Design Star and I haven’t missed a show (if I can help it). I work nights. I have seen some really fabulous designs and paint tecneiques What I’d really like to know is how to do a Venetian plaster on a wall.. I’ve seen several and they are all different and I trust Danielle to point me in the right direcction. I have a 20′ gable end wall I want to do before we put a new (gas) fireplace on it. Thanks and keep up the great shows.

    Hi David

I am staying in Soth Africa. I never used to watch programmes in this line, but after I saw what you can do with colours I try not to miss any of your shows. You know I’ve been struggling to transform my main bedroom and lounge into something beautiful, but could not. After watching your shows I now can make use of your ideas. You are briliant!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Patricia Dunkin says:

    Dear David,

I absolutely love your show. You are my favorite designer by far. I think you are the most talented individual I have ever seen. I love your personality and how down to earth you are. I wish everyone was like you. I was wondering if you travel to New Jersey to do makeovers? I was hoping if you could advise me on picking a color for my bedroom that would go with the color eggplant. My room is all painted in the eggplant color and I wish to continue two walls with that color and paint the other two a different color. What color would you suggest I use? I have beautiful brown traditional furniture if that helps. Ihope you can help me. God bless you always!!!

    Love to you,

    Patty

  5. Charlotte says:

I am a huge fan of you and your show. It has got to be the greatest design show on television. Your ideas are truly wonderful and I just love your paintings. Keep doing what you do and your show will always be on top.

  6. Carol Hegemeyer says:

David, I watch your show when ever I can. I watched it on Saturday and what a wonderful job you did with the kitchen for the two ladies. I love the recycled glass counter tops. I want to redo my 27 year old kitchen and just love the designs you do and want the recycled glass counter tops. I know I will never be able to win any thing to get you to redo my kitchen but I sure can hope. God Bless you and keep up the good work.

  7. Mary Hodges says:

    Dear David,
I know you’re aware of your many young fans, but how does it make you feel to know that you have a 60+ person who would give you free rein in any room in our home! I love your creativity and the ease with which you “work”. Your talent makes your vocation an avocation. Mary

  8. Patricia says:

    Hi David

Your creativity is just incredible — love your style (I can see how you were inspired by Vern)! So-o-o, whatcha doing during your next hiatus? I don’t live far from your Miami home, how can I get you to come help me with my living room? I’m living in a relatively large, boring box that’s desparately lacking definition!

  9. Marlyn Nobles says:

Hi David I am a mom from Philippines I am really fascinated with all your designs> Even before you were chosen as the winner you are already my favorite. I wish I could join your search for room makeover, but I know that would be impossible. I love decorating but i cant put together all the ideas in my mind. I hope you could give me tips how to make my small living/dinning space looks warm and showy.
    More power to your show.

  18. Kathy says:

Hi, I would really like to know what the exact brand and name of the paint colors used on the tuscan getaway episode which appeared on
1/12/08. I am remodeling my upstairs office area and love the tuscan style, but cannot find the right color for the walls. I would also like to know how the “rag”? technique that was used is done.

    Thanks!

  19. doris says:

    David,
Love your shows, I am not as talented as you, but love your colors, I too, have a lot of color in my home.

  20. RUTHIE CRAIG says:

David you are great! Where can I find that very thick paint you used on 3 paintings that were creme colored with one red dot on each one. I want the thick paint. Please help and Thanks.

  21. Myra Shields says:

Well David, you are a very popular person and you just keep getting better with your all your new ideas, your amazing talent and of course your crew is terrific as well. However, I remember you saying you always wanted to do an all beige room…if you did one I guess I missed it and I really would like to see it. Please let me know what episode to search for. If not, you’re more than welcome to do my old master bed room, or at least maybe you could send me some of your ideas as to how to even get started. I’m sure the first thing you would do is pull up the mauve carpet…very good idea RIGHT!

I SO MUCH LOVE YOUR SHOWS & KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK YOU AND YOUR CREW DO TOGETHER. THAT’S WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOW SO WONDERFUL AND VERY WELL PRODUCED!

    Myra
