CBS has finally released the details of its new Mark Burnett reality series, Pirate Masters. The new show will premiere on May 31 and here are the details:

“This is high stakes, high seas, high adventure and the life of a pirate,” Burnett recently told TV Guide. “It’s a huge — and hard — adventure, with jumping off waterfalls, swimming up canyon lakes and crossing mud-filled jungles.”

Pirate Master, first announced last November and reportedly filmed last month, will follow “16 people who all agree that had they been born 250 years ago, they would have liked to be pirates,” according to Burnett, as they travel around the Caribbean island nation of Dominica in search of hidden treasure that will total $1 million. However because only a foolish pirate would bury all their treasure in one spot, different amounts of booty will be found at different locations.

“Of course there is a search for a buried treasure. It maybe at the jungle river, at the mountaintop jungle, or it could be by the ocean,” Burnett explained in a preview video released by CBS. “Every week there’s treasure, and it’s worth a lot of money. Most reality competitions finalize with somebody getting half-a-million or $1 million. In this case, it’s spread each week! In the first week alone, they’re competing for $40,000 U.S.-dollars worth of Spanish doubloons.”

The series will begin with the 16 contestants dressed in period costumes to look like pirates and traveling in the black of night via longboats to a 179-foot, square-rigged barque that carries 12,500 square feet of sail, which will serve as their home for the 33-day duration of their high seas adventure.

I’ll follow it here so be sure to check back for more details.

Disturbing Information regarding the Pirate Masters Production

I spent 3 months this past winter living in Dominica in the Layou River area in a treehouse with no electircity or running water. I am a caucasian woman and I was living with my Dominican friends. Having this experince allowed me to get to know many of the people and their lifestyle.

I have recently learned some very disturbing news about how the people were treated in Layou. Mark Burnett’s people had requested that all the locals keep off the beach and river in Layou the day of filming. This area is a poor fishing village and the locals rely on fishing for their income. Keeping in mind that the locals are poor, have no indoor plumbing or electricity. They rely on the use of the river for bathing, washing dishes and clothes. The local fishermen requested that they should be paid for the loss of a days salary which by american stanards would amont to less that $20.00 per person. This was denied to them and the police were brought in to keep everyone off the beach. I find this very disturbing to hear this information. The Dominican people are very kind and have been taken advantage of. This is very disappointing for me to hear how they have been treated. I have been a Survivor fan and I feel mark Burnett should step up to the plate and personally donate some money to the people. The island could also use some form of advertising as it is in need of the tourist business for their economy.
    Thank you
