Reality TV Hits a New Low
Well, they’ve actually gone and done it. They have created a new game show based on a person’s “gay-dar.” The Lifetime Network will premiere a new series called Gay, Straight or Taken? Contestants are women who agree to go on three dates with three men; one gay, one straight and single and one straight but taken. They are supposed to guess the straight and available man to get the prize. If they don’t guess coreectly, the guys split the prize.
First of all, I want to go on record to say that this is just plain drivel. I can imagine the guys in collusion to set up one of the straight guys to act gay or vice versa. There seems to be no real redeeming value to this show. Anyone who dates, knows that the issue is the available or taken part, but no one intentionally goes on dates with someone who is not of the same sexual orientation. This just seems to me like deliberate sensationalism. They may claim that it will help get rid of sterotypes, but I sincerely doubt it.
Yes, I agree that everyone should be less focused on such trivialities as sexual orientation, but to make it a comical game is just demeaning. What were they thinking?!?
The series will premiere with two half-hours episodes on January 8. I know I’m going to be too busy to watch….
