5 Takes in Florida
The TJs first get to Miami and the weather was fabulous. (I just got back from Miami last Sunday evening, so I can attest to the beautiful weather!!) Zach (from the Philippines) said that it felt like he was coming home, since he’s used to the warm weather and palm trees. Their hostel is in the middle of South Beach.
The message boards tell them to go to Mangos where they will watch and maybe even learn some hot salsa dancing. They got a private Latin dance lesson so they could go join the rest of the club in dancing. Bevis was the fastest learner and Tim seemed a little out of his element.
The next morning they started the day at an internet cafe to check the message boards. The TJs went shopping, but had a tough time finding things on their budget of $50 a day.
Zach explored by himself and found a street artist. Being a comic artist himself, he was great at discussing artist things… ;-)
Bevis talked to someone on the street who told him about a “Full Moon Party” at The Raleigh Hotel. There was dancing, fire throwing, a bonfire and music.
Next day, they went on a airboat ride through the Everglades. They spotted a lot of alligators and then saw a gator wrestling show. Lena was terrified by the alligators so the TJs went and ordered fried alligator and let her have the first bite. She said that she wasn’t sure if it really was alligator because it tasted just like chicken.
Zach was told on the message board to go to Miami Ink (hey, isn’t that another show…?) and that it would show another part of life in Miami. He decided to get “inked” with a drawing he had created. When Bevis asked him if it hurt, he said it was like being tickled…if you mean tickling is like being stabbed repeatedly with a sharp object.
Next, they went to Orlando and headed first to Disneyland. Bevis said he thought Minnie Mouse had a crush on him. (And why wouldn’t she? He’s fun and he’s cute!) They split up to check out the rides and other attractions. Tim was taken with the teacup ride. Bevis and Jaime took tours of the Animal Kingdom. Bevis finally got to see tigers.
Back in Miami, Tim hit the beach and tried to meet girls. Zach and Tim were marveling at the difference in the beaches in Miami compared to their homes. The Florida sand is more coarse than they are used to.
Jaime, Lena and Bevis explored Little Havana. they were interested in the fact that everyone speaks Spanish there and there was a smell of cigars. Then they tried a Cubano sandwich. They struck up conversations with some of the locals and were interested in the Cuban culture. At first, they were confused about why the Cubans would leave Cuba if they wanted to stay in their own culture so much. They decided that the Cubans in Florida came there because of the values of the country, and joined with the others to continue their own culture there. I think it’s interesting that people in other countries are not as aware of Cuba’s government and history as we Americans are.
The TJs decided to charter a boat as their luxury adventure. They took a two hour charter tour of Miami Bay. They all decided that it was a good and relaxing day and the weather was pleasant.
Personally, I had fun seeing the places I was just last week myself. This is the best time of the year to visit, since it’s not as hot and humid. I’m glad they had as much fun as I did there.
Be sure to go check out all of their photos and blog entries of their trip on the Travel Channel site and read the message boards to see what folks are telling them to do on their trip.
This week, they are in Memphis. Stop by and leave them a message telling them where they should go while they are there. And remember, we all get to decide what city they visit last. Go let them know what you think.
